HR software can help you rise to the challenge of absence management

The topic of absence management will no doubt be high on the agenda for many HR teams in 2016. A recent survey* found that 85% of HR professionals identified absence as the No. 1 metric to be measured.

However, according to the CIPD, only two fifths of organisations are currently monitoring the cost of absence and only 25% of organisations achieving their absence target last year.

With the cost for absenteeism rising and adding to the economic challenges that businesses in the UK are currently experiencing, this is not a problem that should be ignored. You can’t just hope that it will go away on its own! Hidden costs such as reduced productivity, increased workload, worsening work output quality, and increased costs for temporary resourcing, can have a large negative impact on the business as a whole and it’s important to tackle the issues head on.

By developing a holistic view of absence challenges, managing short-term and long-term absenteeism with suitable relevant strategies, companies can start to see benefits not just as stark statistics but also in overall morale and work performance.

For example, Leeds Housing Concern implemented an absence management strategy and found that the levels of absenteeism fell by over 18%. This was achieved by helping managers identify potential problems earlier so that they can be resolved quicker, enabling them to better understand their team’s performance, implementing technology to provide managers with accurate information, and improve workplace morale.

Technology should be an important part of any company’s toolbox for dealing with absence. Software can not only help improve efficiencies and reduce cost but it can also help when implementing policies and procedures that encourage better management across the business.

Correctly used, technology can free up the HR team so that they are better able to deal with the people issues that software can never replace. It can proactively identify absenteeism problems, support best practices for how to deal with absence successfully, and empower managers to become more confident when dealing with issues. It can also provide transparency throughout processes, enable easy reporting and facilitate open communication so that the HR manager can take a back seat and focus on where they can provide best value to the business.
