How to Manage Change in a Business – HR Technology

Earlier this year, Jane Pointet Head of HR for the Iris Group, spoke to HR Magazine about the challenges that faced HR teams when the UK was in the midst of a deep recession, before recommending the outlook fellow HRDs should try to adopt now a level of business confidence has returned . The UK economy is experiencing the fastest period of growth in 8 years, and more people than ever are now in employment.

With growth inevitably comes change, which can have a marked impact on businesses, particularly on employees. This then becomes a matter of interest to HR teams; an inadequate understanding of change management can lead to a general breakdown in communication, a loss in employee engagement, and ultimately a breakdown in productivity.

That’s why a recent webinar, organised by People Management, brought thought leaders together from the world of HR to talk about all aspects of change management and technology.

Rarely do the opportunities arise for HR professionals and Academics to collaborate on such a hot topic. However, the webinar entitled HR Technology: Managing Change and Its Disruptive Nature” , welcomed Liz Rivers, a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD and Lecturer in HR Management at the University of Huddersfield, Emma Tomkinson (MCIPD), Head of HR Business Partners at Together Housing, and Marc Greggains, a technology specialist at Cascade HR, who each brought their views and advice to the table.

Liz Rivers talked about the discourse surrounding change management, speaking of the theoretical side of human resource management and technology and citing the likes of Carnall, Rees & French and Beer & Nohria in her presentation.

Emma Tomkinson spoke about the challenges faced by Together Housing who has already been through a period of significant change. Formed in 2011, the Group has brought together six different employing organisations, each with their own HR team, becoming the 11th largest housing association in the UK. With a turnover in excess of £180m, more than 37,000 homes in the North of England and over 1,400 staff spread across a wide geographical area, this is a well-established yet complex business.

Marc Greggains, a technology specialist at Cascade HR, used the webinar as an opportunity to bring to life, through the software, some of the concepts discussed by Liz Rivers. Marc also discussed how the technology can be adopted by organisations like Together Housing to help facilitate change.
