Talent management high on clients’ agendas

Cascade enjoyed hundreds of conversations with HR Software Show delegates last month, but there was one topic that kept coming up – talent management.

Talent management is a common theme in the HR media too. For instance, the CIPD published findings from its 2013 Resourcing and Talent Planning survey last week, which highlighted that ‘top talent is staying put’.

On the face of it, this survey outcome sounds very encouraging. But what implications does this trend in fact cause for the HR industry?

To answer this question we need to firstly define talent management. The CIPD coin the phrase as: “… the systematic attraction, identification, development, engagement, retention and deployment of those individuals who are of particular value to an organisation, either in view of their ‘high potential’ for the future or because they are fulfilling business/operation-critical roles.”

This helps to illustrate some of the complexities surrounding talent management and the ‘war for talent’ that management consultancy McKinsey laid claim to in the late 1990s.

Organisations lucky enough to employ some of this scarce talent must work hard to retain it –such employees’ contributions in the workplace are usually too vital to risk losing. However talented individuals are likely to seek continued professional development, career progression, workplace enrichment and engagement, which is not always easy.

Considering the challenges that exist in the wider employment marketplace though, it is clear that the hard work does not stop there. Despite continually high unemployment figures, 74% of companies are reportedly still struggling to find candidates with the right level of experience, skill and talent to fill the vacancies. For these organisations the immediate challenge is not employee retention – it is the sourcing and recruitment of talented individuals in the first place.

Acknowledging this employment paradox facing UK businesses at present, Cascade is set to present a series of talent management resources over the next six months, for HR professionals to digest in their own time.
