They’re topics we’ve been discussing for some time. But for the first time in 14 years, HR analytics and software systems have topped the list of strategic issues that practitioners are prioritising in 2016.

The findings have arisen from research – The annual survey of HR roles and responsibilities – carried out by renowned industry resource XpertHR.

The trend is reported to be particularly apparent within private sector organisations, with such businesses said to be proactively focusing on strategic people management issues with increasing momentum. An article subsequently published on explained: “There is now a desire to gather, measure and analyse data not only to improve overall performance, but also to demonstrate the value of the HR function to the organisation.”

For clients and regular visitors to Cascade’s website, such dialogue will sound familiar.

Last Autumn Cascade’s CEO Oliver Shaw advised that big data would hold the answer to the HR profession catching the attention of senior management. His guidance came hot on the heels of a Cascade survey, which discovered that 76% of HR and payroll professionals feel their strategic business input remains poorly acknowledged.

Oliver then elaborated on the topic at the CIPD’s Annual Conference and Exhibition 2015, when he shared a HR hacks seminar that highlighted which HR metrics matter in the boardroom.

And only last week, Cascade’s client Randstad – a leading recruitment firm – took to the stage at the CIPD’s HR Software Show to help delegates tackle HR analytics without the headache.

The practical 30 minute session delivered a series of tips designed to power more effective decision making within HR teams and beyond. Drawing upon their own HR software journey, Linzi Omar (HR Shared Services Manager) and Inese Teacher (Senior HR Systems & MI Specialist) recommended how to get maximum value from the metrics that HR and payroll technology can produce, in order to drive bottom line business outcomes.

Commenting on the seminar, Cascade’s Head of Marketing Andy Court said: “Our clients are typically invited to present at HRSS every year. But last week’s session was by far the most popular we’ve ever seen. Every seat in the seminar theatre was filled, with crowds six or seven rows deep craning to try and see the presentation unfold. This alone shows how important the topic of HR analytics has become, and the level of appetite among practitioners to be savvier in their reporting activity.”

The theme was echoed on Cascade’s HRSS exhibition stand, as CEO Oliver Shaw explains: “This year was all about revealing ever smarter tech that will further streamline the way our clients work. We’re continuing to give HR and Payroll teams the tools to overcome any administrative burdens they’ve been experiencing to date. This will increasingly empower them to be more proactive, strategic thinkers that contribute more significantly to their organisations’ bottom lines and drive employee engagement.”
